Cripple Creek, Colorado held it's 3rd annual Ice Festival
05th March 2010

Renowned ice sculptors used chainsaws and other tools to carve larger than life "Under the Sea" sculptures varied from mythical to the unusual, and spectators enjoyed watching the ice carvings as the sculptors create their works of art.

This family friendly exciting event was free to the public. It included several other activities for adults and children, including an ice maze, an ice slide, the "Dueling Chainsaws" completions, a martini bar, and retail and food vendors were there as well.

The 2nd Annual Cripple Creek Ice Festival is sure to please with new and exciting events and attractions. Inspired by Cripple Creek’s volcanic and glacial heritage, the “Enchanted Ice Garden” theme will be laced with an amazing combination of Ice Sculpting and Pyrotechnics.
The centerpiece of this year’s theme will feature an Ice Castle, created from 150 blocks of ice and weighing a total of 45,000 lbs. Guest carver Jeff Stahl of Artic Diamond, the creator of last year’s Magic Ice Mountain, will not only be carving this year’s centerpiece, but will also be creating an Ice Maze and an Ice Dragon Slide. Additionally, the Artic Diamond team will be performing a Fire and Ice Show which will will feature both the ice sculptures and pyrotechnics!
Guest carvers Laurie and Kevin Petty of Dazzling Ice will be dazzling us with carvings of a Dragon, Tree People, a Sword in the Stone Picture Station (bring your camera!), and a Pumpkin Coach. Laurie and Kevin have competed locally, and have been carving professionally for many years. This team will also be carving the Ice Bar for our beer garden.
Guest carver Michael Campe of Colorado Ice Sculpting will be carving an Enchanted Forest featuring a Unicorn, Gnomes, Toadstools, a Small Dragon, and a Large Flying Dragon. Michael Campe has captained ice carving teams that have won National and World Championships.
Guest carver Thomas Barlow of The Thomas Barlow Affair will be carving Flying Horses, Fairies, and Ice Crystals. Thomas is an international competitor in Ice, Sand, and Wood carving and he participated in Cripple Creek Ice Fest 2008 and Cripple Creek’s 2008 Rocky Mountain Chainsaw Challenge.
A Dueling Chainsaws Competition will be held on Sunday, February 8th and Sunday, February 15th at 1 p.m. The beer garden, which will feature live entertainment and vendors, will be open Saturday, February 7th from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.; Sunday, February 8th as well as Saturday, February 14th through Monday, February 16th from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
We encourage visitors to come both weekends, as our Fire and Ice show will be held on the first weekend of the event, and our ice sculptors will be adding new sculptures throughout the two weeks.
